Iran hopes for peace, prosperity on Korean Peninsula

TEHRAN, May 02 (MNA) – Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said Iran was “in principle, opposed to any nuclear-weapons development” and added that Tehran hoped for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

The security of Korean Peninsula is very important for both South Korea and North Korea, Rouhani noted in a joint news conference with visiting South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Monday, adding that Iran calls for continued peace and stability in the region, mainly rejecting any weapons of mass destruction.

“We want to free the Korean Peninsula and the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction,” Rouhani added.

Pointing to the important agreements made during Park’s visit to Iran, Rouhani said one of the accords between the two sides is to turn Iran-South Korea ties to the rooted and strategic bilateral trade and economic relations.

Park and Rouhani observed the signing of 20 out of 66 MOUs after their meeting, the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations in 1962.

Rouhani said he hopes the MOUs boost bilateral trade and pave the way for the two countries to cooperate on massive infrastructure projects underway in Iran.

To create this great economic development, Rouhani said, South Korean companies have been engaged in investment and economic cooperation with Iran bringing advanced technologies to Iran.

President Rouhani noted that the two sides discussed the cultural, scientific and technological relations, tourism cooperation and activities.

Iran’s president suggested that his country is opposed to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

"We want changes on the Korean Peninsula and we are, in principle, opposed to any nuclear development," he added.
